Seventh grade extracted DNA from strawberries and bananas.
Students crushed the fruit in a plastic bag with a solution containing dish soap and salt, to break down the cell membranes and release the DNA.
Then they carefully poured ice-cold rubbing alcohol on top of the mixture to separate and visualize the DNA as a visible white, stringy precipitate that collects at the liquid interface between the two layers.
